Balenciaga Just Announced Their New Designer

On the heels of Alexander Wang's final show for the house this past Friday, Balenciaga has announced its new creative director: Demna Gvasalia, one of the Georgian designers behind the design collective Vetements. Known for its oversize tailoring and reconstructed denim, the label was one of eight finalists for the LVMH Prize in 2015 and is a favorite of industry insiders.

While Gvasalia may not be a big name like Wang—who left Balenciaga after a joint decision to focus on his namesake label—he is considered a major talent. Balenciaga CEO and President Isabelle Guichot had this to say:

"He has quickly emerged as the best choice for the new artistic direction of the maison. With his mastery of techniques, his expertise and fashion knowledge, in conjunction with his innovative and carefully considered approach, Demna Gvasalia adopts a unique vision of the designer's role today and thus recalls Cristobal Balenciaga's own vision. I am confident that he will succeed in embracing Balenciaga's core values and developing them in harmony with today's global changes."

And given Gvasalia's breadth of experience, we don't doubt it: He worked for eight years at Margiela and also headed up women's ready-to-wear design at Louis Vuitton. His first show for Balenciaga will be in March 2016 during Paris Fashion Week, and we can't wait to see where he takes the brand!
