Rosie Assoulin Sees the Light

Photo Looks from the Rosie Assoulin fall 2016 presentation.

If the varicolored candles lighting the way to Rosie Assoulin's presentation in the meatpacking district on Monday posed a fire hazard, no one seemed to mind. Most visitors milling around the otherwise austere space on Gansevoort Street were far too busy taking in Ms. Assoulin's romantically inclined collection of floor-length coats, dresses and jumpsuits, some effusively ruffled, others pointedly underadorned.

A visibly pregnant Ms. Assoulin concealed her baby bump under a glen plaid maxi coat of her own design. "I'm feeling sweaty but great," she said. "And I'm wearing what fits."

Ms. Assoulin is scarcely a n ewcomer on the fashion scene. Ever since her promising debut collection of 2014, she has intrigued tastemakers like Solange Knowles, who wore an Assoulin off-the-shoulder top and culottes to a Bergdorf Goodman fashion bash in December, and fashion influentials like the blogger Leandra Medine.

Ms. Assoulin, who won the 2015 Swarovski Award for Women'swear, has since only stepped up her game. Her star status seemed all but assured when Beyoncé appeared a Rosie Assoulin bodysuit in the video for her new single "Formation," which was released last week.

But those matters appeared far from Ms. Assoulin's mind as she darted gamely around the room to show off highlights of her new fall line. Among those were a fet chingly caped evening dress and a slinky wool jersey gown she introduced while making deft adjustments to its keyhole openings with a pinch and the tug of a cord.

There was a coral tone jumpsuit with a theatrically caped back, and a cable stitched sweater shimmying gracefully over a buoyantly tiered skirt. "We call this the Tutti," she said of a multipanel gown, its various hues echoing those of the candles placed artfully throughout the space.

Did they hold any special significance?

"Everybody feels something when there's a candle," Ms. Assoulin said wistfully. "The mood is, let's get together and light this thing , and maybe everything will be O.K."
