The Importance Of Art Education

By Emily Sigidson

I recently came across an article from Parenting Magazine about the significance of art education. As a soon to be mother of two, I have tried to educate myself on what I think is the best path for my children. I think like most other things, it is important to research and gain knowledge to ensure you are making the best decision.

With that said, it isn't often that I am truly affected by the words on a page, but this particular article was very intriguing. The main point really touched on the pressures associated with school now and how all of the weight is placed solely on tests and test scores.

It went on to suggest certain alternatives that could be offered to help alleviate some of this tension and help promote creativity among our children within the school system.

It is no secret that art is used as a personal outlet. Artists take this opportunity to showcase emotion in hopes of reaching and touching another human being. But perhaps one of the most noteworthy ideas brought up in this piece is the fact that art allows children a chance to learn by doing as opposed to being just lectured on a subject. . It increases confidence and allows kids, who are typically shy in a classroom setting, to really open up about what they have created and are passionate about.

Creative skills have also been noted as a long-term benefit when entering the business world. This ability has been stated as one of the most important traits among companies' hiring departments.

In conclusion, the information within this article proved very intriguing. Upon reading it, I have a newfound passion surrounding keeping art education alive in our schools. It is my belief that this is the most effective way to sculpt the imaginations of our children and help relieve some of the other pressures that are associated with modern day education.
