Fort Myers Florida Offers Visitors Many Delights, Sites And Pleasures

In 1866, new forts were build all along the Caslooshahatchee River to protect the territory against the Seminole Indians. From the beginning, Fort Myers Florida served as a strategic location because of its excellent visibility over the Atlantic ocean. Today the city is the seat and most important commercial centre of Lee County. It is a major tourist centre and there are numerous activities to enjoy in the City of Palms, as it is fondly known.

No tourist should refrain from visiting the Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which was named after the famous cartoonist that also worked ceaselessly in aid of nature conservation. This park, 6000 acres big, is home to an astonishing variety of animals and plants. It is particularly popular with bird watchers. The park boasts an impressive 250 bird species and a very large community of migratory birds.

The City of Palms does not neglect visitors interested in history, art and the theatre. Since 1908 the Florida Repertory Theatre has been delighting audiences. Originally a Vaudeville house, this theatre boasts Thomas Edison and Henry Ford as regular early patrons. It now offers its patrons modern productions ranging from the comedic to the dramatic. It has a well earned reputation as one of then top repertory theatres in the United States.

No visitor to the City of Palms should neglect a tour of the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city. As the name indicates, the estate contained the winter homes of both Edison and Ford. Here is is possible to tour the fascinating Edison Botanical Research Laboratory and the Estate Museum where many interesting inventions and artefacts are displayed.

Sanibel Island is the ideal place to spend a relaxing day in magnificent surroundings. It boasts truly stunning beaches and the water is crystal clear and clean. This barrier island is also world famous for its fabulous shelling opportunities. Shell collectors from all over the world flock to the island in the hope of stumbling over a rare specimen. The weather is excellent throughout the year.

Anglers simply love the City of Palms. Many operators allow fishermen to hire smaller boats but there are also charter companies that offer deep sea expeditions to hunt for Sea Trout, Blue Fish and Spanish Mackerel. Local fishermen land excellent catches from the pier at the Sanibel Lighthouse. Fishing gear is not a problem. It is for hire at many charter companies.

While there is certain a lot of fun and adventurous things to do in the City of Palms, it is also possible to shop in any of the numerous upmarket establishments. Excellent accommodation that will suit every taste and budget is available and there are numerous excellent restaurants. The night life is vibrant and the city caters for every conceivable entertainment need.

Before going there, spend some time planning and researching. The internet hosts many wonderful sites that offer good advice and full information about all the various options visitors to the city have. Booking activities, restaurants and accommodation in advance is a very good idea.
