Guidelines For Pediatric Tube Feeding

By Annabelle Holman

Premature birth happens all the time and it is caused by many things. Regardless of the cause, one thing that these babies go through is the difficulty in living a comfortable life since their bodies are never developed enough to function properly. Underdevelopment of the gastric system causes a difficulty in either eating or digestion and the only solution to this problem is pediatric tube feeding. It is the most common mode of nourishing premature children.

This type of nourishing is done with the help of a tender duct that is used to deliver liquid food into the gastrointestinal system. This nursing method can be used to nurse people who cannot feed normally and it is most commonly used on premature newborn babies. Other than the babies who are born early, it can also be used on older people who have body complications that hinder normal eating.

Some of the health conditions that prevent individuals from eating ordinarily are neuromuscular sicknesses such as cerebral palsy, metabolism problems like burns or cancer, hyper metabolic illnesses, problems related to food digestion and numerous other ailments that may not all be mentioned.

Tube nursing can be divided into two categories that include enteral and parenteral nursing. Enteral nursing is used to put food to the gastrointestinal system and the body is left with the responsibility of digestion. This is used on babies with ingestion problems only. Parenteral nursing on the other hand administers the food straight into the blood stream. This is used when the baby has an undeveloped digestive system.

The enteral feeding is further classified into different categories depending on the point from which the duct enters the body and the point in which the food is delivered. The nasogastric tube is when the food is delivered from the nose to the stomach. Nasodeudenal is from the nose to the upper part of intestines. A gastronomy tube is passed through a surgical opening on the body.

At times the parents of the premature babies have to learn how to use tubes. For them to learn there are some guidelines that they need to observe critically to avoid any types of complications from developing. The tubes ought to be replaced frequently say within a span of 14 days. If the infant pulls the duct by accident before the substitution time has reached the same duct may be used.

The tubes being reused must be cleaned very well with lots of soap and clean water. The nostrils should be alternated when the duct is being replaced. It is important that the parent inspects the tube carefully to make sure its condition is great before it can be used. The duct should have wires that will strengthen it to prevent curling when it is inside the body. They should also measure the tubes before using them to make sure they are long enough to get to the destination they are required.

The child is not supposed to be in pain when the duct is being inserted. If this happens then something is wrong. Their nasal area must be regularly inspected to and also kept clean all the time to prevent any kinds of infections that may arise.
