They are worn by different people for different personal reasons. Today, they incorporate several features that allow them to do more than one function. Sunglasses are worn to protect one from bright light and sometimes from UV light. They incorporate photosensitive lenses which change color to dark when they are struck by ultraviolet light. The transformation of the lens to a dark color helps in blocking off excess light being transmitted to the eye through the lens. Current manufacturers incorporate light polarization in the products to remove horizontally polarized light rays.

Today, glasses are articles for hiding eyes or serving a style or fashion. They are worn by various celebrities and artists to identify and separate the individual from movie characters acted by them. People with impaired vision also use them for purposes of cosmetic

Modern lenses are being made from high-tech plastics and not glass as was the tradition for many years due to better technology. The shift to high-tech plastics is because they offer more advantages than glass. Among the advantages offered include being thinner, scratch-resistant, light, not easily breakable, ability to be treated, and durable. This makes lenses to classified into different classes including trivex, photochromic, polycarbonate, aspheric, polarized, and high index plastic.

Various applications are served well by different lens categories. For example, polycarbonate lens works well for kids and athletes because it is impact-resistant. Trivex lens has lighter, thinner, and better vision correction capability even though it has same properties as polycarbonate lens. The high-tech plastic in trivex lens is comparatively newer also.

High index plastic lens on the other hand is suitable for strong prescriptions. Aspheric lens has a surface that is made of differing degrees of curvature. This makes it different from ordinary spherically shaped types of lens. Its shape allows it to have a lager usable portion than others.
