For The Best Winter Sports Experience Choose Ice Fishing Houses

By Paulette Mason

If your forte is freshwater fishing from the beginning of spring until the end of fall, then it goes without saying that you know what the thrill of the catch is like. Sadly, whether your weapon of choice is the downrigger, fly, or reel and rod, the day will always come when winter forces you to stop until the next year. Fortunately, ice fishing houses make it possible for you to continue fishing right through the winter and join other extremists in this most exhilarating version of the sport.

If this is the first you are hearing of these shelters, it is probably because in the industry, they are actually known as ice fishing traps. This is because while the shelter is not a conventional trap, the ambush is set up by the fisherman inside through a hole in the ice. All fish are hooked, reeled, and processed right inside the structure.

These shelters are labeled as portable or temporary, meaning they are set up on the ice for only a certain amount of time. Remember that the structure is meant to offer greater comfort from the cold so you can focus on fishing more. A good ice house will help you stay warm and dry during bad weather for a long time.

Ice traps range from basic to extremely sophisticated. If you have budget constraints, consider the simplest type which is a thick canvas and poly tent that you can raise and breakdown onsite. Just keep in mind that only your body heat and portable heat sources will be your only means of warmth.

Fortunately, you can purchase more permanent fixtures that have many more amenities. Such shelters typically cannot be collapsed and have wheels, allowing for easy towing. Insulation lines an exterior of plastic, wood, or metal which serves to warm you up even without portable heat.

The larger and more deluxe versions of these shelters do have heat, power, and bunks. If you want to ice fish for days at a time without leaving the source, this is the ideal way to do so. In essence you will have a portable cabin.

If you spear fish, you can buy a special ice traps called dark houses. While small and insulated, these tiny structures block light and sound from the outdoors, allowing you to control what you show through the ice. Over time, the curiosity of the fish lead them to the bore hole at the surface where your spear will be waiting.

The bottom line is that regardless of what kind of housing you decide to go with, the benefits will be long lasting in what would normally be the worst season for fishing. Such a purchase will finally give you the chance to be able to enjoy your favorite sport every single day of the year, even if it is below zero degrees and snowing outside. After bringing your trap home, many days of colder weather fishing and lots of great memories will be waiting for you.
