Buying Quilts From The Quilt Store Vs. Making Them At Home

By Jerri Perry

In this age of convenience, you can buy or pay to do almost anything. However, in many cases, you save money when you make or do these things at home. Additionally, you feel a greater sense of ownership when you create something. For instance, a quilt that you buy from the quilt store will have much less personal value than one you make on your own from old clothing or other cloth scraps.

When you make the switch to doing things yourself and creating at home, you definitely exert more effort and spend more time. It is usually worthwhile, however, when you account for the money you save in the process. Here are a few ideas of things that can be homemade or done for free.

1. Food. This is one of the most beneficial things to make at home. Homemade food is healthier, cheaper, and tastes much better. Cook at home more often, and you will lose weight and save a lot of money. Make large amounts of food and freeze some of it in order to have convenient meals ready all the time.

2. Clothing. In the olden days, almost everyone wore homemade clothing most of the time. However, making our own clothes is a skill that most people have lost. If you can already knit or sew, you are ahead of the game. If not, you can learn. Knowing how to make you own clothes will not only save you money, it will help you develop a more unique look. While four other people are wearing the same shirt from H&M, you will have a unique outfit.

3. Fashion jewelry. You can't make your own diamonds, but most of the jewelry you find in the mall and other shops is not made from precious gems. It is made from beads or stones that can be purchased at craft stores. You can put them together in unique combinations for a fraction of the price that you pay for ready-made jewelry.

4. Picture Frames. In department stores and home goods emporiums, you often pay twenty dollars or more for one picture frame. However, you can make them on your own. Buy some matte or wood frames for cheap, and paint them or attach objects that mean something to you.

5. Exercising. People often sign up for a gym membership in a burst of motivation, and then rarely use it. Or, they ignore all of the complicated weight lifting equipment and simply walk or run on the treadmill. Save your money, and walk or run outside instead. You can purchase handweights for less than the cost of one month at some gyms. Working out outside is better for your mental health, too.

There are lots of other things you can make or do yourself, these are only a few suggestions. Realistically, you will not have time to do everything on your own, especially if you have a full schedule. But even picking just a couple of things can make a difference financially. Stop giving all your money to the gym and the quilt store, and pick a couple of skills to acquire. You will feel good about yourself and save money in the process.
