By Cathy Mercer

Missoni turban is a form of head cover based on cloth wrapping. The names used to refer to this headwear differ from one location to another. There sizes, shapes, and colors vary from place to place. In some societies, every member is required to tie them. Basing on the community, they are worn either by both or specific gender.

Their significance varies widely and their meaning may only be known to the wearer. Some wear them for fashion while in others they signify grief, duty, affiliation, bravery, or piety. When worn for fashion the wearer matches them with their attire. Turbans are worn on different occasions including wedding ceremonies, funerals, religious festivals, and prayers.

Turbans have various uses. People who live in deserts wear turbans to keep sand from their faces. In certain communities, a pagg wearer is considered as a responsible person who must to be treated utter respect. Such a person holds their community together and teaches others to be accountable for each other. They are a source of motivation to younger generations who will do everything possible to emulate them.

Turbans can act as a unifying factor in some cases. In such cases, pagg wearers regard each other as friends. Turbans are exchanged among close friends. The exchange means that they have entered into an everlasting friendship and will forever remain close friends. The friendship comes with favors since members from both families can intermarry freely as a way of strengthening the relationship.

Religions, which allow their members to wear turbans, do not agree completely on when they have to be worn. Some require their members to tie turbans only at the time of prayers whereas others demand that they must be worn at all times. As much as they can differ on that, they still hold the same ideas about turbans. For example, they believe that all pagg wearers must behave in a moral manner.

Some styles of tying a pagg are common in some areas. Looking at how one ties their turban a person may easily tell their clan. To determine this, a person requires experience and skills. People from various areas have their unique methods. There is no specific style of tying a punjabi. People can invent their unique styles for identity.
