Creating Art With Marble Jewelry

By Liliana Mills

Marbles have been a popular item used as beads in jewelry for decades. The shattered glass appeal creates a gem like sparkling diamond effect. Shattered, or "fried, " they create stunning effects in marble jewelry displays.

Jewelry artists, who have learned the heating and cooling technique involved in cooking marbles, have created beautifully unique art. Frying the marbles on their own stove is a very simple process. Then cooling the marbles in ice water instantly achieves the shattered glass effect, but does not break the marble or allow it to use its shape.

With the popular hobby of jewelry making, many hobbyists are learning the spectacular results of pieces made using hand-made beads. As such many are learning to cook beads and have taken up the skill of fried marbles. By doing so they create a truly unique result, which holds a piece of themselves within it.

Before frying make sure your marbles are the style and size you are looking for. Some prefer a solid color shimmering effect, and others prefer a shattered tiger eye result. The type of marble you choose will determine the result. And it goes without saying your marbles should be real glass, not simulated plastic resembling glass. Plastic will of course melt in heat, not shatter.

Also collect materials before beginning. Needed will be glasses or goggles, placed on your face to protect your eyes. Wear cloth gloves, and collect a heat pad. Collect a utensil for removing marbles from frying pan, and a pot or pan for the ice water. Marbles should be heated to medium to high heat. Turn marbles gently when frying.

They should fry 15-20 minutes. Never use oil to fry. The oil could cause marbles to explode if it spatters. Make sure the skillet is dry of cooking agents while frying. Prepare a pot of ice water while the marbles are cooking if this wasn't done prior to frying.

After frying for the allotted time, put marbles in ice water. Use heat pad to handle the skillet. Going from extreme heat to extreme cold is where the shattering occurs. The level of shimmer you end up with in your jewelry will depend on the level of shattering that takes place now. Shattering will depend on how hot the marbles became while frying. For this reason allow to fry the time suggested to achieve desired effect.

Do not bend over a pot, or pour marbles into a pot from the frying pan. If one should break, glass could go into the air. Lower them into the ice water, by use of a utensil. Allow to cool. Never remove marbles without cooling first. You can consult a artist or bead professional if you are unsure how to fry marbles, or purchase them from a craft or bead store.

After they become cool they can now be placed into popular marble jewelry settings, applied to bracelets, trendy rings, and pin sets. You can also use them as a gem charm, on a fashionable key chain, and apply to sparkle and good luck chains for cell phones.
