Beaded Handmade Jewelry Stones Were Present Before Man

By Michelle Howe

You see it displayed almost everywhere. Beaded handmade jewelry can be found in numerous stores as well as in displays at craft shows. This unique art form has been around for centuries and is likely to last for centuries to come. The vast majority of stones used are found all over the world in different forms.

When man first uncovered these stones, they were enthralled with their beauty, Still, there were few ways in which they could put them to use in their daily lives. So these stones became an adornment that was threaded onto a leather strap and worn as a necklace. This inspired man to create other forms that could be worn around the wrist and on the ears. It was even used to decorate clothing.

The materials used have a wide range. Throughout history even paper has been used to handcraft beads along with glass, metal, porcelain, wood, and gemstones of every imaginable kind. These vast variety of material made it possible to create items that were unparallelled in their attraction to the human race. Many of the stone were painted or otherwise embellished to add another dimension to their innate beauty.

These stones were also given meaning by the people and the place where they were found. The American Indian was perhaps one group of people who used beads in many functions and having come from the earth they gave them meaning. One well documented stone of the Indian is the turquoise. This is most likely because the Indian felt this stone was at one with the earth or signified the sky an freedom. Early religions said the ruby stood for the blood of Christ.

Perhaps the greatest draw in beading is found with every creation being different from the other. As no two stones are identical, neither are the items that are produced from them. Even the worlds most advanced artisan cannot produce duplicates due to the variations of the naturally occurring stones found in the earth.

People from all walks of life are attracted to this art form. This type of jewelry is worn by people from all walks of life from the wealthiest of individuals to the average homemaker and worker. The price can range from a few dollars to the thousands of dollars depending on the type of bead that is used in the creation of a piece.

Beaded jewelry can hold its own against the most popular stones known to man. Even the diamond, that is occasionally used in beading, cannot surpass the beauty there is to be found in any of these hand crafted pieces. Nothing can match the one of a kind design that is found when it comes to articles made of beading.

If beading is an art form that holds interest to you, learning the art is quite possible. It will take diligence in practice to produce items that are well done and worn with pride. For some, it becomes a full time practice and making beaded handmade jewelry can soon become a business rather than a past time.
